La Réunion: Young people co-create solutions to protect water and coral reefs

La Reunion Event

In late November 2025, InnWater partners organised a two-day youth co-creation workshop in Saint-Pierre (La Réunion), hosted at Mission Locale Sud and carried out with PRODIJ and the Université de La Réunion. The goal was to bring young participants and local water actors together to explore a shared challenge: reducing water pollution and protecting coastal ecosystems, including the coral reef.

Across the two days, the group combined interactive learning (quiz, watershed mapping, moving debate) with scenario-building and solution design. Participants discussed the links between everyday practices, pollution pathways and coastal impacts, and then worked in teams to imagine “worst-case” futures and turn them into actionable proposals.

Three main solution pathways emerged from the co-creation work:

  • Neighbourhood composting, with local collection and transformation into natural fertiliser to support farmers and reduce pollution pressures.

  • A dual approach combining awareness-raising with the “Corail Game” concept (playful engagement formats) and clearer collective rules to protect the most fragile lagoon areas.

  • A proposal to limit soil sealing and support infiltration and nature-based solutions, including incentives to encourage households and businesses to adopt better practices.

Beyond the ideas themselves, the workshop confirmed the value of creating spaces where youth perspectives and professional experience can meet. The strong engagement throughout the sessions showed a clear willingness to stay involved and continue contributing to public discussions on environmental policies and the WEFE nexus.

Next steps will focus on sharing the results with participants and keeping the momentum through follow-up exchanges, with another youth meeting already planned for January 2026.
